LGBTQ+ Counselling

Aims to support you, understand yourself, deal with discrimination and struggles you may face being apart of the LGBTQ+ community.

Our practitioners have a special interest in working with the LGBTIQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer) community to improve general feelings of wellbeing, happiness and mental health outcomes for our clients.

The Psychology, Counselling and Wellbeing Centre provides a safe and welcoming space for clients who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, intersex, queer and other gender diversities.

Our experience along with current research indicates that LGBTIQ+ people have significantly poorer mental health and are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, substance abuse, suicide ideation and self-harm. This elevated risk of mental health challenges develops largely from gender discrimination and exclusion, and we work with our clients to manage feelings that result from transphobia, homophobia, biphobia, heterosexism and heteronormativity.

We provide psychology services to our LGBTIQ+ clients for a range of concerns including relationships, sexuality, gender, identity, bodies and emotions and help our clients recognise and celebrate their strength, resilience and diversity.

Research has shown that LGBTIQ+ people who are supported by their friends and family are more likely to experience positive mental health outcomes. We encourage our client’s friends and family to join us and help foster a supportive network for their LGBTIQ+ loved one.
